Antibiotics as Part of the Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, including Malawian children, 6 to 59 months of age, with severe acute malnutrition to receive amoxicillin, cefdinir, or placebo for 7 days in addition to ready-to-use therapeutic food for the outpatient treatment of uncomplicated severe acute malnutrition. They found that the addition of antibiotics was associated with improved recovery and mortality rates. Here is the reference to the article:

Announcing the DNS Student Scholarship Winner!

Congratulations to Bethany Blalock who was chosen as the winner of 2013 DNS Student Scholarship! Bethany is a dietetic intern at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, VA and is excited about the opportunity to attend a nutrition support conference. She is passionate about nutrition support and wishes to become an expert in the area of gastrointestinal health.
